How to Message Your Teacher in Schoology (EPISD Guide)
Have a question about homework, missed a class, or need to turn in an assignment late? Schoology has a built-in messaging system that lets EPISD students contact their teachers directly — no personal email address needed. Messages stay inside the school platform, which keeps conversations organized and appropriate.
In this guide, you will learn where messages live in Schoology, how to send a message on the website and in the mobile app, how to write messages teachers actually appreciate, how to check for replies, and what to do if a teacher does not answer.
Where to Find Messages in Schoology
On the Schoology website, your messages live behind the envelope icon in the top header bar, next to your name. Click it to open your inbox, where you will see conversations you have started and any replies from teachers.
In the Schoology mobile app, tap the main menu (the three-line icon) and choose Messages, or look for the envelope icon at the bottom or top of the screen, depending on your app version.
How to Send a Message on the Schoology Website
- Click the envelope icon in the top header to open your inbox.
- Click New Message (usually a button with a pencil or plus icon).
- In the To field, start typing your teacher’s name. Schoology will suggest matching people — click the correct teacher from the list.
- Add a clear subject line, such as “Question about Friday’s math homework.”
- Type your message in the body box. Keep it short and specific (see the etiquette tips below).
- Click Send.
Your message lands in the teacher’s Schoology inbox, and many teachers also get an email notification about it.
How to Send a Message in the Schoology Mobile App
- Open the app and tap Messages from the main menu or the envelope icon.
- Tap New Message (the pencil or plus icon).
- Tap the To field and search for your teacher’s name, then select the right person.
- Write a subject line and your message.
- Tap Send.
If you need to attach a photo of your work or a document, look for the paperclip icon in the message composer on both web and app.
Message Etiquette: How to Write to Your Teacher
- Use a specific subject line. “Absent on Tuesday — makeup work?” beats “hey” every time.
- Introduce yourself. Start with your full name, the class, and the period, e.g. “Hi Ms. Rivera, this is Alex Gomez from 3rd period Algebra.”
- Get to the point. Say what you need in two or three short sentences.
- Be polite and proofread. Use normal capitalization and punctuation, and re-read before sending. You cannot unsend a Schoology message.
- Send it once. Do not send the same message three times.
- Keep it school-appropriate. Schoology messages are school records. Never share passwords, and never include personal information that is not related to class.
- Mind the hour. You can write a message any time, but do not expect a reply at 11 p.m. Teachers generally answer during school hours or the next school day.
Checking Replies and Notifications
When your teacher replies, you will see a notification badge on the envelope icon and the conversation will move to the top of your inbox. Click it to read the full reply and continue the conversation in the same thread.
To make sure you never miss a reply, turn on message notifications:
- Click your profile picture or name in the top header, then choose Settings.
- Open the Notifications tab.
- Make sure notifications for new messages are turned on for email, push, or both.
- Save your changes.
What to Do If Your Teacher Doesn’t Reply
- Wait one to two school days. Weekends and holidays do not count — give it time.
- Check the course page first. The answer may already be posted in the course updates, materials, or assignment instructions.
- Send one polite follow-up. Reply in the same thread: “Hi Ms. Rivera, just following up on my message from Tuesday about the makeup work. Thanks!”
- Ask in person. Catch your teacher before or after class — some things are faster face to face.
- Loop in a parent for urgent issues. If something is time-sensitive, like a grade deadline, ask a parent to reach out through their own channel. Parents can also follow along using a parent access code.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I message my classmates in Schoology?
It depends on your school’s settings. Many districts limit student-to-student messaging. If you do not see classmates in the To field, messaging is restricted to teachers and staff — ask your teacher if you are unsure.
Can parents message teachers through Schoology?
Parent accounts have limited messaging features. Many EPISD parents reach teachers by regular email instead. If you are a parent setting up access for the first time, start with our parent access code guide.
Are Schoology messages private?
Messages go only to the people you address them to, but remember they are school records. Keep every message respectful and related to school.
Can I attach files to a message?
Yes. Use the paperclip icon in the message composer to attach documents or photos.
Can I delete or unsend a message?
Generally, no. Once a message is sent, it stays in the recipient’s inbox. That is why it pays to proofread before you hit Send.
What if I cannot find my teacher’s name in the To field?
Double-check the spelling, and make sure you are enrolled in that teacher’s course. If the name still does not appear, ask the teacher in class or contact your school’s front office.
